A
partnership with Montgomery Public Schools
The Gift of Life Maternal Education Program in collaboration with
Montgomery Public Schools (MPS) provides consistent, comprehensive
maternal education to pregnant students enrolled in the MPS. A
registered nurse with a perinatal education background assists in the
needs of pregnant teens in the school system to achieve optimal outcomes
for mother and baby.
The Gift of Life Maternal Educator rotates between schools that
report pregnancies. The Maternal Educator meets with the pregnant teens
one on one or in small groups to provide enhanced case management and
education. The Maternal Educator initiates face-to-face contact, phone
contact, and makes home visits or hospital visits as necessary. She also
coordinates regularly with the school nurses, guidance counselors, teen
parenting program, physicians, care coordinators, and community agencies
to address needs of the pregnant students.
The
Maternal Educator works with the school nurses and the MPS system so she
is aware of any medical issues being addressed by the school nurse and
can track pregnant students' school attendance. The Maternal Educator
also works with the MPS Teen Parenting program to enroll students. This
program provides pregnant teens the opportunity to attend prenatal
appointments and have adequate recovery time after delivery without
being penalized for the absences. For more information
