Women who reside in one of the above counties, have a documented positive pregnancy test, and are on Medicaid or want to apply for Medicaid, can enroll in the Gift of Life Maternity Care Program. For more information on applying for Medicaid, call your local health department or Medicaid (1-800-362-1504). You can also apply for Medicaid online at www.medicaid.state.al.us. Once you have applied for Medicaid, the worker has up to 45 days to process your application.

• Ask their physician or nurse midwife about seeing a Gift of Life care coordinator to enroll in the program.

Gift of Life's goal is healthy mothers and healthy babies. Since our implementation 20 years ago, many accomplishments have been realized to help reach that goal: infant mortality has been reduced, the number of prenatal visits per patient has increased, more private obstetricians now accept low-income women, fewer patients present to area emergency rooms with no prenatal care, and families have access to more comprehensive care for their babies.
