Maternity Care Program

In 1999, with the new Medicaid Maternity Care Program, the Gift of Life began providing services and education to pregnant women in 20 Alabama counties. They are: Autauga, Baldwin, Bullock, Butler, Clarke, Clay, Conecuh, Coosa, Covington, Crenshaw, Elmore, Escambia, Lowndes, Monroe, Montgomery, Pike, Randolph, Talladega, Tallapoosa and Washington.

Women who reside in one of the above counties, have a documented positive pregnancy test, and are on Medicaid or want to apply for Medicaid, can enroll in the Gift of Life Maternity Care Program. For more information on applying for Medicaid, call your local health department or Medicaid (1-800-362-1504). You can also apply for Medicaid online at Once you have applied for Medicaid, the worker has up to 45 days to process your application.

To enroll in the Gift of Life Maternity Care Program, patients can do one of the following:

  • Ask their physician or nurse midwife about seeing a Gift of Life care coordinator to enroll in the program.
  • Call the Gift of Life Foundation Enrollment Hotline. In the Montgomery area, call (334) 272-1820. Outside the Montgomery area, call toll free 1-877-826-BABY.

Gift of Life's goal is healthy mothers and healthy babies. Since our implementation, many accomplishments have been realized to help reach that goal: infant mortality has been reduced, the number of prenatal visits per patient has increased, more private obstetricians now accept low-income women, fewer patients present to area emergency rooms with no prenatal care, and families have access to more comprehensive care for their babies.

The Gift of Life Maternity Care Program offers the following services to pregnant women and their babies enrolled in the program:

  • Prenatal Care and Education
  • Care Coordination
  • Prenatal and Delivery Classes
  • Social Service Referrals
  • Parenting Education & Classes
  • Nutrition Counseling
  • WIC Referral
